Community Coach Award 1
Do you want to upskill your coaching? The CCA1 modules are the first step on the Netball New Zealand Coaching Pathway. This is targeted for both entry level coaches and/or coaches wanting to upskill and share knowledge. The framework will provide coaches with the skills to coach Year 7 to Under 16.

To achieve the CCA1 award, there are nine modules to complete. You do not have to complete all modules in the same year. The modules are:
- Selecting
- Player Centred Coaching (PCC)
- Planning
- Bulilding Effective Relationships (BER)
- Team Culture
- Shooting
- Skill Analysis
- Attack
- Defence

Each module is approx. 2hours
Coaches will examine the concept of coaches as selectors and cover selection process, policies, procedure, criteria, and communication.
By the end of this module coaches will be able to:
- Understand the purpose of the selection policy and prepare their own
- Identify player selection processes for their team, group, squad, or club environment
- Develop a player profile
Coaches will reflect on their coaching practice, learn what it means to coach in a player centred environment and develop purposeful netball specific games.
By the end of this module coaches will be able to:
- Explain what it means to be a player centred coach
- Show how to use the key tools to deliver a quality netball experience
- Describe the impact coaches can have on a players motivation, confidence and competence to play sport for life
Coaches will learn tools and systems for effective planning for teams, including week and season plans.
By the end of this module coaches will be able to:
- Understand and implement planning procedures necessary to plan for the season, a practice, and game day
- Understand and implement evaluation methos and required modifications
Coaches will learn tools and systems to understand and manage people in a team environment, including communication, people management, and conflict management.
By the end of the module you will be able to:
- Understand the principles & importance of Building Effective Relationship
- Understand the principles of Communication
- Understand and demonstrate the principles of VARK
- Understand the principles of feedback & questioning & how to get the best from your players
Develop the skills to create your Team Vision, establish and re-establish Team Values, and Team Building Activities that can be utilised throughout the Season.
By the end of this module coaches will be able to:
- Understand the importance and fundamentals of creating a positive team culture
- Understand a number of techniques to support culture growth including:
- Character
- Team-building
- Establishing values
- Themes
- Implement activities that will assist the development of team culture
Coaches will gain an understanding of the coaching points and sequential steps involved in shooting.
By the end of this module coaches will be able to:
- Explain & demonstrate the sequential steps involved in netball goal shooting
- Implement activities that will assist the development of the shooters including skill correction
- Understand the roles of the GA & GS
- Understand & coach the movement requirements for shooters, including creation general attacking options & rebounding
Coaches will build knowledge and understanding for how to analyse skill execution and learn new strategies to encourage players to solve problem.
By the end of this module coaches will be able to:
- Understand what Fundamental Movement Skills [FMS] are, the difference between closed and open skills
- Identify FMS, closed and open skills, and the three phases of the skill execution in a practical session.
- Describe what they are seeing using FMS terms, skill type and skill execution.
- Assess skills as they see them being executed.
- Make corrections to a skill to assist in the learning of the player.
Coaches will review fundamental skills and integrate these into attacking skills, deepen understanding of a player centred approach and implement effective coaching points.
By the end of the module you will be able to:
- Identify the coaching points for each of the main passes & attacking movement skill
- Describe how combining ball & movement skills creates opportunity to outwit the opponent
- Design & modify attacking learning activities
- Layer activities to make them harder or more complex
- Assess your team, identify weaknesses & plan for improvement
Coaches will discuss stages of learning, the phases of defence, and extend knowledge on how to link one on one defence with intercepting and decision making.
By the end of the module you will be able to:
- Explain in detail each phase of defence
- Describe how linking the phases together creates defensive pressure
- Design & modify defensive learning activities
- Layer activities to make them harder or more complex
- Assess your team, identify weaknesses & plan for improvement
