Session Information
Each week/session will have a specific focus. Each week players will learn more about positions of the 7v7 game and focus on specfic game rules.
Below is a guidline to content delivered each week. Guest coaches may adjust content they deliver with similar concepts accordling to their knowledge and experience.
Focus: NetballSMART, Landing, Testing, and Games.
- NetballSMART: NetballSMART is a key component of netball that helps players understand how to prepare their bodies for play and reduce the risk of injury. This includes learning the importance of safe landing techniques, as well as completing activities that develop strength, stability, and overall skill progression.
- Testing: Testing will be based on the Netball NZ Secondary School protocols. Players will learn how to complete each test correctly and understand how the results can be used to monitor and improve their performance.
- Games: Players will be observed during gameplay to assess their current knowledge and skill level. They will then be grouped accordingly to ensure appropriate challenge, development, and competitive balance.
Focus: Variety of passes, Speed and Agility, Games.
- Variety of Passes: Players will learn and practise a range of netball passes to build accuracy, power, and decision-making. Sessions will focus on selecting the right pass under pressure and using effective technique in game situations.
- Agility & Speed: Session will develop quick footwork, acceleration, and reaction time. Players will work through short, dynamic drills that replicate netball movement demands
- Games: Players will work on implementing the skills learned during the session into a 7v7 game, allowing them to apply techniques in realistic match situations.
Focus: Striaght Leads, Getting Free, Court Balance, and Games.
- Straight Leads: Players will develop strong, direct attacking movements to create clear passing options and maintain timing and flow on attack.
- Getting Free: Sessions will focus on body positioning, change of speed, and using fakes to break away from defenders and create space.
- Court Balance:
Players will learn how to maintain width, depth, and effective spacing across the court to support attacking structure and ball movement. - Games: Players will work on implementing the skills learned during the session into a 7v7 game, allowing them to apply techniques in realistic match situations.
Focus: Pressure, Shadowing, Phases of Defence, and Games.
- Pressure on the Ball: Players will develop defensive intensity by applying immediate, controlled pressure on the attacker with the ball to limit passing options and disrupt timing.
- Shadowing & Blocking: Sessions will focus on tracking attackers’ movements, maintaining close marking, and using effective blocking techniques to intercept or slow play.
- 3 Phases of Defence:
Players will learn the three defensive phases and how to transition between them to create turnovers and protect space. - Games: Players will work on implementing the skills learned during the session into a game suituation, allowing them to apply techniques in realistic match situations.
Focus: Gaining Ball, Passing into Space, Timing of Movement, and Games.
- Gaining the Ball: Players will focus on creating clear options to receive the ball by using effective leads, strong positioning, and movement into space.
- Passing Into Space: Players will work on delivering accurate passes ahead of the mover to support attacking flow and exploit open areas of the court.
- Timing of Movement: Athletes will learn how to coordinate their drives and leads to ensure passes are well-timed, reducing congestion and improving attacking structure.
- Games: Players will work on implementing the skills learned during the session into a game suituation, allowing them to apply techniques in realistic match situations.
Focus: Re-Testing and Game Play.
- Games: Players will participate in full game play to apply skills under pressure, showcase growth, and development throughout programme.
- Fitness Re-testing: Players will complete fitness assessments to measure progress and compare results to their initial testing, helping identify improvements and future focus areas.
- Skill Activities: [If required] a range of skill-based drills will be used to revisit key programme concepts, allowing players to demonstrate development in technique, decision making, and movement.
